Over the last few weeks, the work crew of “The Vines” located in Baldwin City, KS, have been hard at work getting the trellis system for block A & block B installed.
End & Line Posts In
We completed the drilling and post placement of over one hundred CCA Treated Posts. These posts make up the support system for the vineyard trellis for block a & b, which covers a little over 2/3 acres of grapes, that were planted earlier this year. It was a lot of hard work, but we can now look back on it and reflect that it wasn't all that bad…
Here are some pictures that we took of the completed work;
Trellis Wire System Is Next
We'll start stringing the wire for the trellis system later this week. However, we do not anticipate the work for this stage of the trellis system will be as hard of work.
At least, not when we compare it to the work we just completed!
We'll be using what is termed as a 3 wire “Top Cordon” system for training the vines and establishing the vine's growth pattern for the coming years. Initially, for this year, we anticipate we will only need the lowest strand of wire for the support of the vines through winter.
The remaining stands of wire will be installed next spring after the spring pruning has been completed.
Summary
That about wraps up the progress here at “The Vines”.
Work continues to monitor and maintain the existing vineyard blocks. However, we are well underway with the planning and design of 2017 Vineyard Planting too.
For now, it looks like with the coming of Spring, we will be planting an additional 400 – 600 plants which will give us a vineyard of just under 1000 plants.
Give us your feedback and let us know if you would be interested in volunteering for next years work!
